Questions to Get to Know Your Roommate

It’s that time of year where roommate assignments are out and everybody must begin on the road of getting to know each other. You’re going to want to talk to your roommate before you move in and, if you’re like a lot of people, figuring out what to say may be awkward at first. Luckily for you, I’ve come up with a few different categories of questions you can ask to kick off your beautiful friendship.

1. First things first, ask “get to know you” questions.

Ask the normal things, like: What are you going to study? Where are you from? What’s your favorite food? Get to know your roommate on a very basic level first to open up that communication.

2. Plan out your room and what to bring

After you’ve established the basics and the communication lines are flowin’ the next category of questions is asking about what stuff you should bring. Ask questions like, do we want to loft our beds? Are you bringing a futon? What about beanbag chairs? Who’s bringing the TV? Do you have a Netflix account? And so on and so forth. Planning out your room together, even minimally, gives you that sense that you’re a team and in this together.

3. Time to ask some thought provoking and fun questions

Once you have your room set and it’s looking pretty sweet in your mind, it’s time to move on to questions with a deeper meaning, or are just fun. Ask things like: If you could be any animal what would you be? Or what their favorite memory was in high school. These questions may seem kind of strange, and they definitely can be, but their main purpose is to start to learn about the other person’s personality and get more comfortable with each other. Besides, you’d be surprised how much you can learn about a person by finding out which planet they would colonize if the technology existed.

4. Now that you know them a little better, find out what you can do together

There are going to be a ton of opportunities to hang out on campus, so find out what types of things the other person likes to do. You don’t need to establish the kind of relationship where you two hang out together all the time - though you can - but it is still a good idea to hang out at least every once in awhile.  And to do that, why not learn what kinds of things you both like to do?

Ask what their favorite activity is, what kind of things they are involved with or want to get involved with and how they like to spend their free time. If you have a sense for what your roommate likes to do it’ll help build a good friendship.

So there you have it. A few questions to help you get the ball rolling. Once you actually move in it’ll be a good idea to have more conversations about ground rules and such. You know, to keep the peace, but this should be a good start. Have a good summer and we’ll see you on campus soon!
